How to Reset Your Office 365 Password — All Methods Covered

Locked out of your Microsoft account? This guide covers every method to reset your Office 365 password, including business and school accounts.

Forgetting your Office 365 password is a common issue, but Microsoft provides several ways to regain access quickly. The method you use depends on whether you have a personal Microsoft account or a work or school account.

For personal Microsoft accounts: Go to login.microsoftonline.com and click 'Forgot my password'. Enter your email address and complete the CAPTCHA. Microsoft will send a verification code to your recovery email or phone number. Enter the code and set a new password.

If you have set up the Microsoft Authenticator app, you can approve the reset request directly from the app without needing a code. This is the fastest method if you have the app installed on your phone.

For work or school accounts (Microsoft 365 Business or Education): Contact your IT administrator or helpdesk. They have the ability to reset passwords from the Microsoft 365 admin centre. If your organisation has enabled self-service password reset, you can use the same process as personal accounts at aka.ms/sspr.

If you no longer have access to your recovery email or phone number, Microsoft's account recovery process requires you to verify your identity by answering security questions or providing recent activity details. This process can take 24–48 hours.

Once you have reset your password, update it in all devices and apps where you use Office 365 to avoid being signed out unexpectedly. Enable two-factor authentication to prevent future lockouts.
