Office 365 Billing Issues Explained: Unexpected Charges & How to Dispute Them

Facing unexpected charges on your Microsoft 365 bill? Here is how to identify, dispute, and resolve billing problems with Office 365.

Unexpected charges from Microsoft are one of the most common complaints from Office 365 users. These can range from auto-renewal charges you forgot about, to charges for family members' accounts, to outright billing errors.

The first step when you notice an unexpected charge is to check your Microsoft account at account.microsoft.com under 'Order history'. This will show you every transaction Microsoft has processed against your account, including the date, amount, and subscription name.

If you see a charge you do not recognise, check whether any family members have a Microsoft account linked to yours through Microsoft 365 Family. Purchases made by family members on shared plans can appear on the primary account holder's billing.

To dispute a charge, contact Microsoft Billing Support at 1-800-msn. Clearly state the date and amount of the charge you are disputing and ask for a detailed explanation. If the charge is confirmed as an error, Microsoft will process a refund.

If Microsoft refuses to refund a charge you believe is incorrect, you have the option to dispute it with your bank or credit card provider as an unauthorised transaction. Provide your bank with the Microsoft order details and your cancellation confirmation if applicable.

To prevent future unexpected charges, review your active subscriptions regularly at account.microsoft.com and turn off auto-renewal for any plans you no longer wish to continue. You can also set up billing alerts through your bank to be notified of any Microsoft charges.
